Magnetic Resonance Imaging (MRI)
In the Weilheim Practice, we use 2 modern high-field MR tomographs featuring strong gradients and the latest coil technology. The MRI spectrum is very versatile and showing great dynamics regarding new developments and applications. This allows the creation of detailed images in different body regions.
MRI is particularly suitable for the visualization of soft tissue structures such as the brain, spine, joints, muscles and for special questions on the diagnosis of the abdominal and pelvic organs as well as inflammatory bowel disease. Now an established procedure for the diagnosis of prostate cancer, it is also performed at the Weilheim Practice as part of the check-up.
Thanks to a special technical sub-specialization and equipment, the practice has special expertise in the field of musculoskeletal diagnostics, i.e., in the clarification of diseases of the joints, tendons, ligaments, bones, soft tissues, e.g. in case of injuries, wear-related complaints, inflammatory/rheumatic diseases, occupational cooperative issues, etc.
How does MRI work?
In magnetic resonance imaging sectional images of the body are generated by means of a strong magnetic field and without the use of X-rays.
Nuclear Magnetic Resonance Imaging uses the magnetic properties of the hydrogen atoms for imaging. The atomic nuclei feature an intrinsic spin and thus become a tiny magnet. In a strong external magnetic field, these usually disordered magnets align in a direction parallel to the magnetic field, similar to a compass needle. By means of a short high-frequency pulse, the uniformly arranged atomic nuclei are briefly made to roll. Once the pulse is switched off, they quickly return to their original position. During this time, the hydrogen atoms send out signals that are received by special coils. An image of the examined body region is calculated based on this signal.
How is the examination performed?
During the examination, the part of the body to be examined is moved into the middle of a tube of about 70 cm of width. Brightly lit and well ventilated, the tube remains open throughout the examination time (about 10 to 15 minutes).
Our state-of-the-art devices are of a compact design and featuring wide openings. Even a patient suffering from claustrophobia can feel at ease during the examination. In some exceptional cases, a sedative may first be provided for reassurance. With the sedative administered, the patient is no longer allowed to actively participate in road traffic. During the examination, a more or less loud humming and knocking is heard. Thanks to ear protection, this should not cause any stress.
With some issues, it is necessary to additionally administer contrast medium to a vein. The decision whether this is necessary or not is done by the examining physician upon a preliminary interview with the patient. The contrast agent (gadolinium) is very well tolerated; side effects are extremely rare. The substance is not radioactive, it spreads very quickly in the bloodstream and is completely excreted through the kidneys.
